About the Book :
Barbauld never lost her dissenter’s independence of mind. In 1793, two months after its outbreak, she published a pamphlet attacking the war with France. And in Eighteen Hundred and Eleven she provides a vision of an empire founded on force and doomed to extinction. Britain, so powerful now, will ‘rank among the names that once were great’; she will be supplanted by America; tourists ‘from the blue mountains, or Ontario’s lake’ will wander through the streets of London as through the relics of Greece and Rome. The poem was much talked about but, like Keats’s Endymion, it met with a crushing review by Croker in the Quarterly. Barbauld published nothing further in the remaining thirteen years of her life.
